The map, similarly, grows in scale, as different territories are acquired and dominated. When gamers complete a mission, they'll keep the research, money, and vehicles they've acquired and use them in the next mission. Still, Pumpkin Studios created rewarding landscape set-ups. It's like a microscopic ant war at times. The working class designs don't ruin the game, but they don't match the level of vehicle variety by any means. Imagination is the limit! And yet, they all look a little like variations on shoeboxes for newborns. Compared to an everyday item, like say shoes, which have to fit a particular size and purpose, these vehicles could look like anything. Crafts should be bizarre and encouraging, not ordinary. Crafts are made up of wheels, bodies, and a little bit of texturing to fill in the gaps, plus an armament, and that's it. The downside to the vehicle creation is that most vehicles look amazingly generic. Serious mega-weapons can be used to great benefit by doing so. The key is to decide what kind of army is best for you, and then to push that tangent of weapons intelligence to the hilt. Not that this strikes me as terribly unique and innovative - because many other games use similar strategies - but with the vast abundance of vehicles, the game sows in balanced aspects of sheer action with creation, research, and development. Design different powered crafts, such as hover vehicles, with scouts, and middle-range Viper units, and you'll have learned a valuable lesson in resource management. Choose heavy-duty, slow but powerful crafts and you might be overrun by a quick fast army that's easy to instantly reproduce. Based on five different body types, Viper, Cobra, Bug, and two secret crafts, gamers can design their own military strategy. The kind of crafts you create determines your strategy. This is where Warzone 2100 really earns its stripes. Only Total Annihilation comes close to Pumpkin Studios' mega-unit warehouse of crafts, but with Warzone 2100 you're actually creating the kinds of vehicles, not just acquiring them.Ĭreating the vehicles and implementing their overall effect is the most fun element in the game, for sure. Unlike any other RTS on any other system, Warzone 2100 ups the ante by enabling players to create up to 2,000 unit designs with 400 different kinds of technologies. One of the most outstanding aspects is the phenomenal amount of vehicles to be created. The more exploration, the greater your resources (oil), the better your research (new vehicles and weapons), the more powerful you become (better than a little girlie mon). With Warzone 2100, both a PC and PlayStation title, the central theme that resonates throughout is design. Just like in the old days of Saddam Hussein and Mad Max, oil still makes vehicles run it's the ultimate booty. By searching throughout the vast terrain, the first of which is hilly desert, players will locate the resources that make their worlds run, oil. In the beginning, players start off with basic design crafts, the Viper attack unit (tank) or builder unit (truck). ![]() Splitting up into rogue groups, they begin to rebuild their civilizations, and naturally begin feuding over territory. Standing in the wake of this catastrophe, a few lucky people do survive. Mistake or no, millions across the world instantly meet their maker, and millions more die slowly as the onslaught of nuclear winter sets in. Gameplay In a not-so-original way, Warzone 2100 drops gamers into a post-apocalyptic world, one in which NASDA (the North American Strategic Defense Agency) has "accidentally" set off hundreds of nuclear warheads across the face of the planet, leveling each of the major cities in the world. And why not? People play all kinds of games, especially if they're good ones. Eidos and its development team Pumpkin Studios look at the measly RTS genre on PlayStation and see something different, an opportunity. Needless to say, the strong belief that console heads aren't into these kinds of games has been reinforced by publishers, correct or not. ![]()
